Born on July 24th 1783 Simón Bolívar was a Venezuelan military and political leader who played a key role in the establishment of Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Panama as sovereign states independent of Spanish rule. He led a number of great military victories, and at one point was president of both Peru and Gran Colombia, which included most of northern South America. Today Bolívar is considered a national icon across South America, and his birthday is a national holiday in Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, and Bolivia.
