I'm at level 29 in the classical age. I can win battles pretty easily, but not without major casualties (like, my entire army in some cases). There has to be some ways to try and reduce those numbers. Any tips would be appreciated.

I think picking a target you can handle is the only way. You either clear all defenses or you lose everything. I find about a 3:2 mix of Phalanx to archer works best for me. I add a few raiders to grab resources after I've cleared most of the defenses. Heavy cavalry has been a waste for me. They don't do enough damage to justify their cost in food and space.
Also - If anyone leaves any defensive buildings exposed for easy picking make sure you take them out right away. 4 or 5 Phalanx can take out a building that would destroy dozens if you leave it standing. Especially if its a catapult

cavalry. i send 5 french cavalry like torpedo at enemy catapult. then strategic placement of infantry and bows. this usually means close to the cav once catapult is dead. when i try to be cute and place infantry in other locations not behind the cav my casualties increase. so ill only do this if necessary to take out balistas or vulnerable garrisons. my army composition is 5 french cav, 10 bows, 51 infantry. i farm roughly a combined 1 mil gold/food (500k of each) per hour. i dont know how well this stacks up against other peoples performance. i also have 1 wall miner and full mercenary camp with freeze tactic for harder bases.........in enlightenment age infantry gain +1 range so infantry, bows, cannons all shoot from further away than cav. which allows cav to tank more of the damage. in classical the infantry will pile in with the cavalry which means they get shot by towers more. this is bad if ur scared of towers. but it also means balistas are more dangerous to cav because in classica the balista will shoot at cav and infantry equally since their all at same distance sparing ur cav the damage

cannons and cav seem to be the key. infantry and bows are support. and supply cart to make things go a little smoother

At classical u can pretty much destroy bases just with Foot and range troops. Try to stick around 400 to 500 medals. Don't stack ur troops try to release them in lines or "waves" . And mostly overall PICK YOUR BATTLES . don't attack people too much higher, Release 1 or 2 troops to see where the Gold piles are. And don't worries about your medals , just keep farming for resources and keep on upgrading .

Overall - pick ur battles
- make sure u got alliance troops filled
- don't stress the Medals
- HAVE FUN

Cavalry. cav in this game PULL AGGRO EVEN IF THEY DON'T GO IN FIRST. Go in with 4-6 to draw fire or clear a path. Use a single cav to "save" infantry being gunned down by towers. He'll pull all tower aggro. Send cav in on one side to distract catapult, then send in infantry on other side. Cav are the absolute KEY to minimizing losses. You WILL lose a lot of troops if you don't use tanks, there's just no way around it. I'm medieval now and my typical army (farming) is 6 cav, 25 melee infantry, 15 archers (chu ko nu), 1 miner. On many raids i lose only the miner and a few infantry. Infantry are the units that go down most easily, simply because theyre ahead of the archers, despite their higher hp. Try to take out outlying ballista towers with 5-7 infantry EARLY. Hopefully theyre on the outside of the settlement. Once ballista towers are down, cav are practically invincible.
