Assault Rally vs Protect - what am I missing?

Guys,

I finally got around to experimenting with the new(ish) Assault Rally tactic... it's sweeeeeet...

Thing is, I don't understand the point of Protect any more...

Comparison:
Protect - costs 15k food - 50% dmg reduction to selected troops in a radius of 3 spaces - lasts 15 seconds
Assault - costs 16k food - 90% dmg reduction to selected troops in a radius of 10 spaces - lasts 16 seconds

So for the extra cost of 1,000 food, Assault Rally selects a 10x bigger area of troops that will be protected. The protected troops enjoy nearly double the protection. And it lasts a second longer. Surely that's gotta be a no brainer right there???

And even if that straight comparison wasn't enough to convince you, Assault Rally troops also get a +170% speed boost, +200% attack speed, +200% damage. I guess nobody is using Protect any more... ever???

What am I missing...?

Protect was nearly worthless before, but now by comparison it is just ridiculous. No value there.

Assault Rally is not available to Industrial or below, so Protect could have value at those levels. However, since the Protect duration has been severely nerfed, I no longer use it at Industrial either.

Don't worry, the powers that be will be nerfing AR soon, to bring it in line with the others.

Yes it doesn’t make any sense. AR does need nerfing. I’m amazed it was even released with those stats. A blind man could have seen it would be over powered.

Personally I would remove the damage reduction altogether from AR. This would nerf AR and create a differentiation between it and Protect.

yep the best suggestion about both tactics to make them viable. Protect needs more duration imho. Like 5-6 secs more

Well that’s nexon way ...
make u work hard at achieving maximum lvl then nerf it .they not innovative enough to come up with new stuff .just b******** us now till the game is dropped .its 3 weeks since ar bug .nothing done .some peeps have asked nexon to demote there lvl 4 ar to 3 so at least the fire rate is as normal and get protection and speed .which overall is better performance than the ar4.nexon has obliged and done it .

Yeah, I was surprised to see 90% damage reduction too.

Nexon has done a very good job at balancing certain aspects of the game by not nerfing the core issue but rather coming up with something new to counteract it.

Take ranged infantry for instance and how for some silly reason they could shoot over walls (they're not archers any more! :) ), with the mortar being the only thing able to stop them (take them out and the rest of the base fell like a house of cards). Instead of nerfing ranged infantry... the designers came up with the missile silo. Brilliant move.

When heavy cavalry (tanks) were rolling into the TC at ease (freeze the anti-tans guns and there was no way stopping them) the "rocket tent" (does take copious amounts of oil to achieve) was released, as well as a new trap: the decoy trap. Things are certainly not that easy any more for armies that are just comprised of tanks and aim for the quick 2-star win.

It is hard to see a way of countering the AR though, unless it's something that simply hurts the clock. I really hope more decoy traps aren't the answer though... :)

fyi, tanks were nerfed, years ago, long before the bazooka tent & decoy trap came out.
But I agree counteracting is a better way to balance things, and gives us something new to play with.

Okay, so if I'm reading you guys...

Protect is there to help those guys who are Industrial or below, because they can't make Assault Rally
Assault Rally becomes the go to tactic for guys at Global or higher, because Protect is useless in comparison

Tinsoldier knows all about this but can't actually fix Assault Rally until the next update. And if we believe Manifesto, Davina, and Excalibur, then that next update would conveniently allow Tin to cripple, (sorry nerf, lol) Assault Rally back to something much weaker, when he 'fixes' the accidental bug...

Yeah astero, you're totally right. Protect used to be MUCH more powerful. Used to last about a minute. In the days before the Darkness of last year's summer/fall defense steroids. Until Nexon canned that programme halfway through. But we don't talk about such things here, hehe...
