I am at level 95 with 6,907 experience points. Why do I keep getting matched with (attacked by) much higher levels, i.e. 201 just now? Is there something that I can do to balance this out?

what is your age in game? If you are a rushed industrial, then expect to get attacked by players one age above you which is global. Global players can reach as high as 220 more or less

Battles are determined by Age. Players can attack bases of their Age or one Age above or below (except Space Age). It may be a good idea to build up in your Age and not rush to the next one before you are ready because it opens the door for new higher-level attackers. There are many theories on exactly what to prioritize and how to best manage Age progression.

But you will ALWAYS get crushed by bigger players. It’s how the game is designed. Your only revenge is to do the same to smaller bases than yours.

Thanks for the reponses.

I think that is it. I am a "rushed industrial age". I didn't know if matching was based on experience points or number of attacks or....

So there is nothing to do but continue to build defenses, correct?

Will I be adversely affected by going on the offensive to gain resources?

Many players advise to max out your offense at each age (just the troops/tactics you actually use) while paying little attention to resource and defensive buildings. This works well if you are an active attacker. You can build resources through attacks much faster than farming. And as pointed out, you can never build a base that can stop Age+ attackers. Your best defense is to build up and spend quickly or to be under a peace treaty. I recommend to build your base with the City center on the edge and hope for defeats to limit resource raiding. There’s nothing worse than getting your resources stolen over and over without actually losing any battles to gain treaty protection.

My looting strategy is to drop medals by raiding without getting any stars all the way down to 200 medals, then building a full army and rolling over weak bases with minimal losses on the way back up to around 2000 medals. I can usually fill up my resources in a few hours with training blessings running. Then it’s just a matter of prioritization and build times.

Personally, I like the defensive aspect of the game so I invest a lot there. Unfortunately defense is irrelevant in the current RPG/AR meta, but perhaps this will change.

I agree with Black Tiger's strategy. If you lower your medals, you will be matched against others who are rushed and have lower experience. This is easy to do. Start a battle, drop 1 troop and end the battle after that troop is gone. You will loose 16 to 21 points per battle. I dont go down as low as Black Tiger does. I usually keep it around 600 medals but I see the wisdom in his strategy.

Not at all, in fact that's the nature of the game. Gaining rss by attacking will always be quicker than farming. There are always higher aged players at any medal range so it doesn't matter where you end up. However, there are usually more closer matched opponents at lower levels.
If you like attacking but don't want to go too high then spend too much time dropping back down again, drop 1 every 3-4 matches. This will help you stay at a preferred range while still getting in plenty of attacks.

Couple of things to add - to minimise revenge attacks look for bases that are abandoned to attack rather than stocked up ones. If you're getting attacked by someone much higher then there is possibly a reason why; I'm 175 Industrial and would not attack a level 95 unless you had a fair stock of Oil.. (If I did, I apologise - I only tend to hit low Global bases now!)
