Why do people seem to think that second slot can be unlocked for free? I expect it to cost real cash like the estate, $50 is my guess.

The only way to unlock second slot would be library - some research chapter 6, but they didn't say anything about library in the last notes.
Mansa Musa capstone research will be minus 1 citizen for gold researches at uni.

So the only way to unlock second slot will be money or crowns through the shop
If money, then we will have another issue on forum like with mansion and we lose more players. If crowns - probably it will not be cheap as well so...

I also think we will to have to pay real money. 49$ may be a bit of too expensive provided this extra slot will be available at Iron Age. It may scare new players away. If I remember correctly, estate was available for later age - but I may be all wrong. I think 20-30$ sounds reasonable and would drive a high adoption for this feature.

The question remains if the 1000 crowns will be for one paralel upgrade or for a permanent use I hope its the later as the other way around it just doesnt make sense for early ages, but still

I don't think they would have described it as ''unlock the ability'' if you had to spend the crowns for every extra upgrade. From the release notes...
