Can someone explain how Barrage's damage works?

I always assumed Barrage's damage was a straight damage of X in the attack radius, but in a recent attack I just executed, there seemed to be variation in the damage done.

The situation:

My Level 5 Barrage does 1,018 damage. The Howitzer has 870 HP.

I attacked a base where the enemy had 2 donated howitzers, and I used a separate barrage on each howitzer as they were spread out. The first barrage wiped out the first howitzer (as expected), but the second one did not kill the second howitzer, leaving it with a tiny amount of HP. How is this possible? How the hell did this second howitzer survive??

I've been wondering this as my previous go-to strategy for siege on defense was to barrage it. Since howitzers I have been largely unsuccessful with this due to what you just mentioned. Can anyone clarify?

I'm pretty sure it works by having the max damage right in the middle and this reduces radially outwards to the edge of the zone. So if you aren't super accurate it won't do the full damage.
This is a guess at best but does the animation not show something similar with more arrows in the very centre?

I've just resorted to betrayal since I can't rely on taking them out, although that also seems to not work sometimes as well so I have to do kamikaze runs with planes

Something like BarrageDMG = rand(5,10);

Based on BHG's track record of wonky maths.

That or the "damage drops off from the center" theories are the only thing that make sense.

If it is the latter, it would be nice if the damn tactic mentioned this somewhere.

Acropolis and Versailles can affect those calculations.

Do donated troops benefit from both? That is crazy if they do. It still doesn't explain how 2 different barrages had 2 different results for me.

Maybe more troops came out of the TC. TC has defending troops so your second barrage damage might have been spread across those troops including the Howie. Just a thought.

To add even more confusion, I now just looked up my Barrage again and it actually does 1,120 damage, so I'm even more confused as to how howitzers are surviving it (which has happened a number of times since my initial question was raised).

Nothing indicates that there is a finite amount of damage to distribute. Its simply X damage in the area of effect. But apparently in Clash of Clans similar abilities see the damage drop off as you deviate from the central point, so that is probably what happened here. Still, it would be nice if the game explained that.

Can someone confirm that donated troops benefit from Versailles and Acropolis? My head is still spinning from that comment.

I think, falling arrows can't damage a howitzer. Maybe the gunner laughed himself to death in the first case...
(Khm... use betrayal next time)

Math proof points aside, Barrage eventually upgrades to the point where it fires artillery shells, not arrows (at Level 5). Once I have Level 6 Barrage the problem should go away again, although the math does not make sense to me and was the reason I created this thread.
