I'm a gun powder age Romans player almost ready to go up to enlightenment. I am leaning toward English or French but I am open to anything. So what nation should I switch to and why?

Well first can you give us some more info on your type of play style and what comp you like to run? Because I recommended French to one of my buddies and he doesn't even use their unique troop so I feel its kind of a waste since all he uses are shooters and cannons.

Right now top nations are British and French.
Mid tier are Chinese, Korean, German and Roman
Bottom tier are Japanese and Greek

I use both. Personally I prefer British as it suits my game style. French don't come into their own until IA I think.

What about the extra Korean tactic ? That brings Korea up there.

It also depend of your priorities, do you prefer war or gaining ressource in multiplayer?

german... british nation is getting pounded by recent changes in the game, particularly loss of tactics making it difficult to prevent mortars from decimating riflemen.....german nation is most flexible tactically with 15% fury bonus to all troops (including planes) in PVP and war...+ somewhat enhanced rally (not clear on whether this really works like it should). Otherwise, I think french with high power tanks, faster training time and larger alliance gate....

I'd split the nations into 4 tiers:

1. British, Korean, German
2. French
3. Roman, Chinese
4. Greek, Japanese

Seems to me British is as powerful as ever since the tactics change, decoys are very well capable of keeping mortars away from rifles. Germans are crazy with the fury, Koreans are crazy with 40% more rifle dmg + extra tactic. French is good but not as good as those 3, pure combat power wise.

Romans and Chinese have at least some offensive benefit, but Roman's troop space is not enough to be the equal of French's alliance troop space + tanks, and Chinese unique rifles + merc slot isn't either, mainly because the Chinese rifles aren't as good as British or Korean rifles.

Greek and Japanese should be avoided, pretty much.

I totally agree with you, british seems even stronger after the tactics nerf. On paper korean seems pretty strong but some of my teamates changed from korean to british and they all were very happy of their new nations. For mixed army and ht army germany is still a great choice, but as a german who mostly play with ht I don't see my future bright, I will have to change to british at some point.

I think British are the most forgiving nation currently, with a good unique bonus and the best unit in the game. Korea and Germany have at least as much overall strength but are less friendly to play as.

The French are an amazing mp choice to farm with, but fall short of the big 3 in war. Romans are really strong through GPA when infantry matter, fall off from EA through GA, and (in my opinion) pick up again in AA with the advent of APCs although many would disagree with that.

Chinese are very mediocre except for the extra citizen. If you're an active player that doesn't let workers idle I think they are an excellent choice for helping to power through the ages. The extra mercenary slot can be incredibly strong for war in certain ages as well, although mileage will vary of course.

As mentioned, the Greek and Japanese are neglegable with poor unique units as well as nation bonuses.

Overall, you can't go wrong with any of the big 3 although Germans are by far my favorites, and the middle 3 all have their merits depending on what you want to do.

Thanks for all these comments. I look forward to reading through them again and considering the best choice for me.

How do you attack as British? Send in range troops after everything else?

I send in mercs and heavies first to take the damage. The extra range of the shooters gives the British that edge.

I began with Chinese and switched to French during EA, now I'm Global and I don't regret my choice, even if I've switched mostly to Heavy Tanks mk3 instead of the french tank, the reduced formation time and the bigger alliance gate cancels that out.

I've gone from Korean to French to British, then back to Korean. They are beasts, especially if you've buffed the shooters in the university. The extra tactic has been critical after they nerfed them with the update. Just my two cents.

I agree the British aren't too phased now, but only if you have high level Uni research.
My rifles can take a reasonable amount of pounding, it's only on well upgraded mortars that I need to use my planes or demo tactics.

my group thinks germans are underpowered ... but i love them.
germans have rally and damage and pretty blue rooftops; i even love the bruiser high damage foot troops; i have them maximally upgraded in university; they are like little generals.

if you're just entering enl age you aren't asking about highest-end competition ... where the range of archers really shines....

french has a clear advantage in the best tanks to their purpose of eating damage ... and troop construction speed, but that shines best if you are obsessive, and always frustrated that training blessing isn't fast enough ...if you *don't* have that frustration, then don't go french. myself i just go do something else if my troops aren't ready, so french can't really be my thing.

i'm really partial to german; it's the one part of the game that clearly tends to my style; others think it's UP but i think it's really nice.

I'd move Chinese a tier up for the extra merc and special rifle unit (granted its the worst of the 3 special but it's still better than other nations)

Greeks and japanese are absolutely useless. lol

In my opinion, Koreans, Germans, British and French are examples of well balanced nations, that have their own specific advantages and you can't exactly pin down the *best* among them. Chinese and Romans are the "niche" nations (+1 citizen, more barrack space for army experimentation) that are somewhat weaker than the first 4 nations but they have their own small features that help. Should be buffed a little. Finally, Japanese and Greek are just worse versions of German and French, essentially. No one cares about shooting TC, longer peace treaties, miniscule reductions to build time and small refunds to buildings. Should be buffed ASAP.
