So I guess the devs took a look at all the French and Greek players in this game and decided we must be killing diversity...oh wait..well whatever. This update probably hurt your feelings the way it did mine.
I had spent time and effort working out a good, well thought out raiding group. I used 11 Comps, 9 spears, 13 guns, 1 supply wagon, 2 First Aids and 2 protects as my regular raiding group. I almost never used all for tactics but everything was in an effort to support the cav so I could take down my targets defenses.
Just to say I tried it out, I used this raiding group with the new mechanics in place and it was disastrous. It was laughable watching my cavalry lock onto one wall block and then hit another one after creating a breach, but this time with a significantly reduced dps. I watched how slowly defensive buildings went down and during the last 45 seconds, judged that my troops were not going to kill all the defenses before I ran out of time so I used rally's to hit resources. Keep in mind, at this point I had not yet lost a single comp. The cav simply don't have the punch they need to do what they are designed to do..kill defenses. I suspect that even if the cav didn't have a love affair with hitting walls, I still wouldn't have been able to kill my targets defensive buildings. Again, this was a reasonably soft target. Just 7 xp spots bellow me but a poor layout.
So what do French and Greek players do? The French nation ability isn't just viable..it's one of the best. Especially with training times for units like bombards and supply carts taking as long as they do. The Greeks? The reduced building cost is pretty good but the the better early finish option is almost unusable, particularly when ug's start taking days and weeks. Difficult to know if one week from now I will be at my game and ready within 35 minutes of a ug to use that feature.
Our unique Cav units were very important to our nation's and now I am finding myself at a loss on how to use my companions which I enjoyed so much. The solution is actually pretty simple, really. Switch to bombards and foot soldiers. This method is already pretty well proven. Its sad though. I was resisting this route because I wanted to be able to use the Greeks effectively and I enjoyed cavalry.
So, the obvious question all this brings up is, do we switch nation's? I've never been more tempted too, and this doesn't mean I won't..just not yet. My fellow cav users..or perhaps formerly so..this is not the last time the devs will "balance" this game. There is no point in running to the next nerf. Wait it out and see how things go. Switch to bombards and foot soldiers. Hopefully in the end, we will again have a useful unique unit.
