How does the medal system work?

I don´t understand how the medal system works. I was attacked by a level 168 industrial age player, got 3-starred, I am at level 151. Lost 8 medals but when I revenge I can only get 1 medal even if I should 5-star him. Does anyone have a clue how this work?

It's based on the difference of medals between you two. Doesn't have anything to do with level, only age and medals.
He got less medals then you hence his reward is big, the more he's lower the more medals he can get. Same thing when you attack others.

Thanks for the answer Porcupine! That should mean when I move up one league at first there should be plenty of medals to gain and when I´m top ranked in that league there´s less. Or have I got it completely wrong? I assume I can only attack and get attacked by players in my own league.

Negative, you will attack and be attacked by players out of your league. Most of the time it can be 2 league differences. If you see a base that is +1/-39 then you have more total medals then that player.

The Medal rewards have no reflection on skill in the game... Just depends on where you happen to be medal-wise and who you happen to be matched with at the time. I have stopped caring about medals long ago and have much less frustration with the game. Hopefully they will come up with a league system that will actually reflect skill soon. In the meantime have fun in the wars and just hit multiplayer to collect more resources for upgrades

Because of the pyramidal effect, medal system and ranking is now more or less stale. At some point you only get 1 medal because you can attack only players way below you in medal. Similarly you get attacked by those same players more often losing 20-30 medals each time.
