As the tank is an upgrade of the chevalier, are French tanks going to be superior? Seems historically odd, amd looking at the stats of tanks it could be a huge advantage.

Yes, the nations will keep the same type of unique unit.

This is from the Q&A with lead designer

Q: Will the nations shift their military focus when they reach industrial or just keep the equivalence? In Rise of Nations the civs changed from era to era, like the Romans having a killer infantry on ancient times but not being all that phenomenal when reaching the later ages. Will DomiNations follow it's footprints? -- David Pasquinel via the Forums
A: While it worked for Rise of Nations to have nations shift their military focus over time, it’s difficult to make that same adjustment in DomiNations considering all the time, resources, and in some cases money that players put into their troop upgrades. With the current unique unit paradigm we have limited ourselves to using troop types that are available in Iron Age for unique units (when nation selection is first made).

wow this "Unapproved" thing is pretty excessive. Two links in your post is enough to get it tagged as such, moreover those two links are links to this forum...

Well, in fact, french tanks were superior on World War I, that's why they got cocky on the early stages of World War II and got outgunned by Germany.

But frankly I think that if they just keep this fixation, there will have some mad alternative realities, like Greece having a killing tank on World War I onwards.

British should have bonus to tanks, actually. So far, this bonus may be OP.

While I would love to have the historical accuracy, I agree with BHG's decision to keep unique units for each country the same through all ages. Game balance is hard enough as it is with the different nations. Also, I can just imagine all the complaining about BHG "forcing" people to change nations (spend crowns) by taking away your ability to use your same play-style with your same nation.

French tanks were superior, the Renault FT is the most influential tank in history and the father of modern tanks. So why wouldn't it have superior stats?

WW1 was "the war to end all wars". Afterwards the French decided on a defensive doctrine, not wanting to repeat history and built the Maginot Line to prevent further aggression.

No one expected there to be another war, especially so soon. But hello Hitler. Everyone was content with Nazi Germany initially because the French army was so strong, they didn't believe Germany could attack. Hitler was even man of the year by Time magazine (a big deal back then)

The Germans couldn't attack directly and so decided to invade the neutral low-countries so they could sling-shot into France, bypassing the Maginot Line. No one ever expected such a tactic due to that regions terrain and the fact it would be suicidal politically as those nations were neutral. With the bulk of the French forces on the line, they couldnt respond to the attack via Belgium in time. When the Nazi's marched on Paris, the French government had a choice to make, surrender or let Paris burn.

France is home to some of the worlds most iconic landmarks and French culture is among the most important and influential (that is why France is the most visited country in the world) and Paris is the center of all of that. Now they could refuse to give-up and have it all destroyed out of hubris (looking back on the rape of belgium and other events, the German army already displayed what will happen to occupied cities) or surrender and fight back via resistance and ally support.

The brilliance of Erich von Manstein and the new ways of warfare created by Nazi Germany paved a new way of warfare.

Americans have a weird education on WW1 and WW2. I think your history books are biased / incorrect

What is difficult for the devs, is making a tank for the Greeks due to the military position of Greece at that time. They had nothing iconic and self-made, unless they pull some designs from the Balkan Wars, which would look really funny compared to the other nations lol
