I can instant upgrade my town center for ~3000 crowns.crowns.

If I do that does it not cost gold or citizens?

7M gold normally costs ~1500 crowns.

If I pay the gold to upgrade and make my citizens free to start the town center upgrade, then immediately speedup the upgrade, will the speedup then only cost ~1500 crowns?

Do I understand this correctly?

The benefit of crowning something is that you don’t need any citizens for the build. You can have zero citizens free and crown something to finish it. Ideally you would want to have enough rss to cover otherwise you’re using more crowns to buy the needed rss as well as instant build the structure. You can start the build on something and decide to crown later but the benefit isn’t as great as when you instant it without starting it. Example something that takes a week is like 2100 (Just an example to show easier math not exact an figure obviously) which breaks down to 300 per day but if you wait until 1 day left it’s 500 so the not the same benefit. Of course that depends on the amount of crowns you want to spend. The amount of crowns per time is the same regardless of citizens needed so better to crown something that normally requires more citizens than less.

just a correction...1 day is equal to 300 crowns, 2 days is 450, 3 days is 600.

Using instant upgrade still costs gold/food. If you don't have sufficient gold/food then the total number of crowns needed to do the upgrade is higher. If you've got the gold/food required and it costs 3000 then if you start it by paying gold/food for it then the cost to instantly finish it (right after starting) will be 3000 still.

Crowns simply save you time. It still costs resources. For instance, I was working on Amelia upgrades during the recent discounts (they're all oil-based). Each upgrade cost 300 crowns AND it would subtract the oil that I had saved up.

Of you don’t have the necessary resources, the extremely high cost of buying the missing resources is built into the instant cost. So yes, the instant upgrade is cheaper when you gather the necessary resources first.
