This should take into account the net loot. Not just how much you can steal from people but also how much you are likely to lose once you log off if you can't spend it all. Soon you'll have to start saving for big upgrades.
At 200 medals, you will get attacked repeatedly when you are offline. And because no one cares about medals that low, you will get victories and no peace treaties. And someone else will be able to attack you. Assuming you have a lot on offer, you could get attacked 10-15 times a night and lose all your resources.
At around 800 medals, people start to care about medals so if you leave your town center unprotected and protect your resource buildings with wall compartments (one in each separate compartment), you're likely to get a defeat from someone sniping your TC, giving you a 8h peace treaty.
If you plan your playing sessions right, you can drop medals, loot and then move up the medal ladder before you log off to protect your loot (exposed TC + wall compartments for resources). Below 1000 medals, you'll move up and down by 10 or 20 medals at a time, so it's quite easy to change your medal range in a short period of time.
Personally, I don't think it's optimal to stay at one unique medal range for those reasons.
