To address one question from this week’s thread on Nation Balance: we did consider having unique troops spawn on defense (i.e., Greek Companions spawning from their Stables on defense). However, that would be problematic for nations that have ranged light infantry like British Longbows, where they would be a less valuable nation choice since we don’t have a building that produces ranged troops on defense. It would also make combat substantially more difficult to balance, with a whole new variable to consider. So we opted to have defensive buildings produce regular troops.

So I'm playing French and I get 2 unique units spawning out of my command post, which happen to be 2 St Chamond tanks worth 20 unit space. But apart from the French and the Greeks, other nations get 4 unique units (infantry or riflemen) worth 4 unit space?

Tim said that would be unbalanced to replace the regular troops in garrisons and stables by uniques. So they introduced a new building to produce uniques which is so well balanced... I wonder if Tim reads his own post :)

Infantry unique nations spawn 6 foot soldiers, not 4. But yeah, seems like the French and Greeks have a huge advantage. 2 tanks are far superior to 4 or 6 light units.

I heard the Brits got 4 riflemen. Maybe that's the game balance they have in mind, 4 riflemen = 6 infantry = 2 tanks :)

Lucky French and Greek then. Playing Japanese or Germans seems to be a disadvantage. I suppose they can tear down buildings and cavalry, ( tanks? ) I guess even the Romans might feel hard done by. Must be hard to find a balance.
