It seems weird because diamonds are usually valuable but there's hardly anything you can actually use them for?

They're supposed to be a huge reward for total DomiNation in a battle but they end up being useless?

It would be sweet if we could exchange them for things like metal and wine.

Most of the most powerful blessings and mercenaries require 1 diamond each. For example: weapon blessing, fortification, animal blessing, and of course war elephants

I have to agree with op. Diamonds are the most useless resource in the game. I have never had a shortage of them. Not once. Basically all my other trade goods run out and I have 15 to 18 left. I wish we could trade them for gold or food.
