Industrial Age Upgrade Priority?

Hey Everyone,

I have just over 4 days until I'm up to IA. I am curious what the veteran players upgrade priorities were when they went to IA.

I have 6 houses for 12 citizens. My thoughts are the following - spend my food on upgrading the armory to get started on researching IA level troops and spend my gold on one mill so I can store more food for said troop research and then the remainder for the oil refinery OR for air defense. I have a feeling that as a fresh IA base I'll be taken out by a lot of air attacks from more established IA and GA players.

One of my original thoughts was to immediately work for the 100K oil for the bunker but I think that will take some time and probably should just wait for a bunker discount event.

Just curious what others priorities were. Thanks!

Sound good, I wouldn't bother with air def, they will take you out anyway, just lay low in medals and up ur offense, armory top, mills and markets so you can upgrade everything else, and airfield so you can get better planes o, library! Lots of great new techs

Well I went into IA with the idea that working on the buildings I already had should get to IA level before I invested into the bunkers and anti-airs and I can tell you that's a bad idea. Having double bunkers and anti-airs has been a pretty strong deterrent. Either way you want to be focusing down on offensive upgrades over defensive ones when you start an age though. So start with the armory, mills, and markets required to upgrade units and stuff. Then the airfield as air units really change the game completely.

The usual, armoury, barracks, troop upgrades for the ones you use, then airfield, get some planes, library..... the 7th house for your missing two workers.

You can practically upgrade everything else as discount events roll round over the 6 months you'll be stuck in IA.

You actually don't have to raid that much as everything takes a week+, unless you like walls.

As Eddie said, the usual. I mean, what was your priority during the other ages??! Did you max your walls or your offenses?

What you guys are saying was what I did with the other ages and was what I was expecting to hear. Wasn't sure if I should focus on air defense or even air in general.

Walls are not maxed and can just work on those while things are upgrading.

I'm getting the answers I am expecting - thanks all!

SeeFive - air units make attacking easier and more effective - definitely go for air units - you'll wonder how you got along without them!
(Was just being a little sarcastic about the walls - lvl6 or 7 is fine for most people) :)

lol - I used to be like that but, placed correctly, walls need only hinder the army while your towers do the work.

Or, strategically placed walls - or holes in walls - can direct the army into killing zones - while your towers do the work !!

As many others have said, focus on getting your offensive capabilities upgraded.
So, that's armory, barracks, and the mills required to get your troop upgrades (depending on whether you have the Notre Dame). Markets can wait.

Get 4 workers on the armory, and 4 on a barrack, and another 4 on a mill, if that's required.

Barrack upgrades take a long time, and, so, plan to start them early. If you have two of them under upgrade, the time it'll take you to retrain your troops can be quite significant, so, please plan to stagger them accordingly. So, I might suggest keeping four workers on barrack upgrades, one after the other.

Once the armory upgrade is complete, get those freed up workers upgrading the oil refinery. Once they finish the refinery upgrade, get them on building the air strip.

Among the troop upgrades at the armory, prioritize getting the tank upgrade from the heavy cavalry - this provides a huge jump in health and damage of the tanking unit in battle.

Next, get the artillery, if you're not playing as nation with unique archers; else, upgrade your shooters ahead of the artillery. Keep the armory busy at all times. Plan to gather the resources necessary to start the next upgrade, while one is in progress.

At this point, if you haven't got the seventh house, get the market upgrades necessary to get the seventh house (I had purchased the starter pack, so, unsure of the cost in IA).

Next, upgrade the war academy, as it allows you to carry an additional tactic. Once this is done, upgrade betrayal at the armory. Betrayal upgrade from level 1 to 2 provides a huge jump in its effectiveness.

Next, upgrade your alliance gate - there are two levels of upgrades available in IA. You may plan to do this earlier, later, or in parallel to other upgrades, whenever possible.

Next, focus on upgrading the mercenary camp. Unlocking the Flammpanzer tank provides a good boost to your offensive capability in wars.

In terms of upgrading defenses, upgrade one stable right away - this upgrades your forest defenders to tanks - a significant jump in defensive capability.

Next, upgrade your cannon towers to anti-tank guns - this provides the maximum boost to your defensive capability - the jump in the damage caused is quite significant.

Avoid building a bunker till you upgrade at least a few cannon towers to anti-tank guns. It's best to place a bunker (and the likely path the heavy tanks will take) within the range of an anti-tank gun or two, but, in a separate section, separated by walls - if your heavy tank gets betrayed, your anti-tank guns will help in shooting down your betrayed heavy tanks, before they'll cause too much damage to your base.

The library has two levels of upgrades too.
Focus on completing at least till chapter 3 of Savings chapters, so that you'll be able to hold 6,000 oil at your vault.
Next, focus on completing at least till chapter 3 of Aviation chapters (unlocked by the second level of library upgrade, and at least one chapter of the preceding research) - this will allow you to carry two planes, even if you take time to get your air strip upgraded to level 2.
Don't neglect your Negotiations chapters too - if your defensive upgrades are going to lag behind your offensive upgrades, making effective use of peace treaties is crucial to minimize loss of resources. Find two medal ranges - one, where you're able to gather resources effectively, and another, where you can park safely (there are medal ranges where you're prone to repeated attacks by raiders and demolitions, where you'll lose resources to repeated attacks, without getting a peace treaty, and another, where attacks against your base are typically full scale attacks, who flatten your base completely once, and leave you with a peace treaty for a good 12+ hours, protecting you from further loss of resources - when you're logging off for the day, park at the range where the second behavior is predominant - you'll lose lesser resources by doing it).

Anti-aircraft guns can wait too. Build them when you have completed at least one stable and a few anti-tank guns.

I haven't spoken about the factory, because, I'm playing as the French, and I'm yet to build one. If you're playing as the Germans or the Romans, you might want to fit in the factory upgrade somewhere, as getting your factory to level 3 unlocks the heavy tanks for you. In that case, it's important to complete the chapter which adds splash damage to your heavy tanks at the library.

Overall, Industrial Age is a lot of fun, and I'm sure you'll have a good time with playing the game! Feel free to stop by and ask any questions as you progress through IA, and we'll be happy to help you!
Cheers and happy gaming! :)

Flash -

Thanks for the very detailed set of instructions! The information regarding the bunker is especially helpful as I would not have thought to pair the anti-tank gun with the bunker in case of betrayal. I have everything upgraded to max for enlightenment age expect for farms and walls. I wasn't able to take advantage of the latest event for the discounted farms since all my citizens were used up. I personally am also not too worried about the farms. Walls will just come over time. The suggestion for troop upgrades was spot on with my plan. I am also French and know the St.-Chamond will be a big boost. Then I planned on upgrading artillery and then supply truck for wars and then ranged infantry. It sounds like that focusing on the offense is way more important than the defense. I mean, I think we all know that this is more of a offensive type of game anyway. Thanks again! I'll use this for future reference!

Thanks Flash! That was an awesome post. I am close to max enlightenment and will be upgrading soon (hoping for a rush event to happen). I will definitely use these ideas.

I will have pretty much max everything before I jump except walls, so that when I hit those long upgrade times I'm not playing catch up. All I would add, as someone that hasn't bought the starter pack and for someone else that is just entering Industrial, is to work it out so you have your resources maxed (6,000,000 gold and food) at the time you enter the new age so you can instantly make the house and only need another million food to start the armory upgrade.

Flash, can I ask when you might work the Wonder into this? After everything else? I kinda like the idea of SoL and the extra oil and power on planes.

This post is quite dated. If I have to prioritize now, I would prioritize the artillery and shooters ahead of tanks.
And, swap the mercenary camp and war academy, and move the alliance gate after both of these.
And, wonder (Brandenburg Gate) right after the mercenary camp and war academy

Thanks for getting back to me Flash. I have gone through most of the offensive upgrades you mentioned, deviating from your order a little. All three barracks, armory, War academy, merc camp, alliance gate, air strip, oil refinery and also library.

I'll probably follow your advice on upgrading at least one stable and a ballista, also probably one garrison.

There is now a toss up between the wonder, the museum and building the other defenses (bunker, mortars, traps etc) upgrades. Having the legendary artifact makes me want to prioritise the museum. Wanting the boost to air troops makes me want the statue of liberty and to upgrade the uni so I can start Amelia. I think the bunker as soon as refinery finishes and then the museum. So many things to upgrade!

If you war a lot, or if you enjoy wars, you'll find the Brandenburg Gate to be more useful than the Statue of Liberty.
Factory troops gain a lot of importance later on in the game, and the Blitzkrieg tactic is very useful in wars.
