its less about making them walk a little further although there is that. its a little more about making units deployed initially go after regular buildings. which forces the player to use a rally right from the start or the troops will keep going building to building outside the walls while being close enough to be shot. houses are great because even basic towers with 5 range can reach. bigger stuff like barracks put the attacker outside their range while the building is destroyed. and if the attcking playet kills lets say 3 farms before all his stuff is deployed and he rallies on the wall theyve absorbed 2k worth of hp so that also helps. but if u dont have the space u dont have the space do what u can

Great point, thanks for explaining that. I'll def. adjust once I do have the space.

dbukalski I understand your theory in general, I disagree on some points, specially saying "you just hit the middle wall to get to the other 3 storages", lol units could never get there with 3 cats and all defences and garrison troops there.. this is no theory, this is experience from a lot of defence replays, im sure if I had higher walls the enemies wouldn't even get past that first layer. As of mass horse raiders, I have never gotten them, I think its a terrible attack, didn't know it was common as you mention it, I disagree there as well, maybe that's the medal range difference. If I start getting those I may re-think, as of now no problems at all with that.

Anyway, I didn't post this base saying it's the best base there is, and I definitely didn't post it to compete with yours, I just wanted to share because I've had GREAT results with it, even if you don't believe it.

So let's just agree to disagree or whatever we need to do to keep the thread on topic, sounds good?

what does staying on topic mean if not what weve been doing for 2 pages?

I feel that we have been going around on your theories and you trying to disproof the base, just try it out and then you can judge it. People who have are pretty happy with the results. I'm kinda tired of discussing based only on your theories that's all.

There are a lot of things you don't consider by just watching the screenshot, you have to see every little detail work together, from the positions of the trash buildings and how they lure troops if not deployed properly, to the the traps and how the garrison troops work around getting the troops distracted and bunched up, etc...

So as I said, try it out before you judge it, you might be surprised. ;)

blackbrain-- your base designs have been tremendous.

i've used a tweaked version of your original classical base design (the one with one catapult, i'll be finishing the library research for the second one today, though) and have rarely gotten attacked, let alone attacked for any meaningful resources.

when i do get attacked, it's usually by mass archers, which are more of an annoyance than a true resource hit.

my medieval upgrade will finish soon, and i'll strongly suspect i'll be adopting some version of your base -- from a philosophical standpoint, i'd just much prefer to lose one storage than have a risk of losing all four.

one question for you -- how do generals factor into your base defense? has your medal count insulated you from attacks using generals? i have no idea how strong generals are, but if they're comparable to how strong castles are on defense, then does your base still hold up?

Thank you resnullius I appreciate your comments and I'm glad this layouts can help as a base for your designs. :)

I don't get a lot of generals because of the medal range as you were saying. But when I do they don't seem to make a big difference. I also don't notice a lot of difference when I use them on my attacks. Maybe I need more experience to make the most of them.

But yes, as you were saying I don't get a lot of generals on my defences and when I do, they don't make a lot of difference, I see them as 1 more horseman or something like that.

generas attack is crap like 65. they have a lot of health at 10k and u can upgrade them so eventually theyll probably have 100 attack or so. their mostly a bullet sponge for now. so better on defense imo

Yes I agree with dbukalski, better as defence.
Maybe later when upgraded they will do some difference, but not at the moment, at least at my age/medal range.

i tried ur setup last night. normally when i wake up i have 8 ish defenses of varying effectiveness before 1 player manages to break the egg and put me in peace treaty. that player manages to tag 200k ish resources. usually an enlightenment player. 1 player might grab some resources using the arrow tactic. that might get 10k or something because my storage is bunched. but otherwise if i have to guess im at 7 out of 8 attacks being totally stuffed (they walk away with 600 food or something from farms). often times the successful defenses will kill town center for a short peace treaty but no resources.....last night when i woke up i had 11 attacks against me. one was the usual enlightenment player who took everything for 200k ish. there were a bunch of one storage attacks at 40k a pop. and a few attacks where it was archers shooting over the wall at 20k. it could have been an unlucky night. but i think the reason ur not getting hit hard is because of lack of stored resources......the reason i have stored resources is because farming gold which gets used on walls leaves a full mill.....dont get me wrong ur base design is great. i like that all 3 cats can attack all squares. and maybe at ur wall level and resource storage its enough to keep the smart players away from storage thats not worth the losses......i would rather completely and utterly destroy 7 attacks and then have one enlightenment player take the full montey for a long peace treaty. than get picked to death 1 storage at a time during the night...... it might be of interest to u guys that enlightenment melee units use rifles that shoot 2 squares over walls. so that design with storage right up against walls just wont cut it.....but i am still curious how my design works for u at ur wall level. any feedback? im onto gunpowder now so will have redoubts to incoporate and finally threaten the enlightenment swarms

After reading the post, I tried the balckbrain's design. I use a similar design, with 2 mills in center, and 2 markets closer to outside wall. I am currently at level 42 medieval age. Previously I used a similar design with 3 grids for classical age and had success.

The result for the layout is generally good. But as dbukaiski pointed out, I often lose resources to lower level players spamming archers. They don't rally at all, they just shoot from far. In most cases, they can't do much damage, but when they do, they manage to erase two storage buildings. The loss will be around 20K. But it's annoying when you can't get peace treaty, especially when I chose Forbidden City.

I think if you have much more resources, a double-wall layout will do better. Only much stronger players will attempt to steal.

On the other side, tdbukalski's situation that he only needs to protect mills should suggest others layouts. If you only need to protect one kind of resources, I am sure we can have better layouts to deter invaders.

and 20k for 2 storage units is small amount. so ur not getting farmed by heavy hitters

Not to say this would work, but if an enemy gets in one cell, then takes out the very center wall, they have access to all cells. BUT, as usual, the Warriors in this game are very stupid and will shoot at a wall even though there's already access.

this is my base right now. im in the process of upgrading all wall to 6. it's gonna take awhile though. now im suspect most people will try to attack from the north so i will focus on that area. the only weakness is from the south which i dont have neough toy for now. But i will eventually cover it up when i reach higer age

i tried to rally on center wall when i ran into this setup but they attacked the wrong section.

I was actually able to rally as you said when I encountered a similar setup and did get the center wall, the only thing is that the cats were already down when I did this because they were vulnerable from the get go being all on one side.

When I see people on my defence replays trying to rally somewhere inside the square the troops usually don't get there because of the cat dmg. but I guess with a strong army or good war tactics it could be done, so you could call it a weak spot.

So dbukalski, whats your medal range?, because I've never been hit by an enlightenment army as you say, I' m guessing no matter the base, if you get hit by those they will wipe you out.

So with this base I was getting an average of 9/10 attacks ranging from 0 to 10k resources lost, and then 1 attack getting 1 full storage for about 75k-90k (I do store a lot of resources most of the time).

Last night I got my first attack were they took 3 storages, it was a really strong army, they used 3 tactics (2 sabo 1 heal), elephant mercs, and the Colosseum buff, so I'm guessing with my walls I would probably been hurt anyway with any base, but hey at least I didn't get 100% which has never happened (maybe because I stay within my medal range).

I'm actually very happy with this results and I wouldn't mind staying like this, but I took dbu's advice and designed a "donut" base, just to see it's results and of course to learn more and different strategies, I also want to try it before gunpowder age since as dbu mentioned earlier it works well there as well (tho I'll probably explore something different too in gunpowder just for fun :)).

I just finished the base some hours ago, I haven't gotten hurt yet so it's working well, I'll post my results after more testing and the base itself if it turns out to be a success.

Thanks for the donut advice dbu, it's always good to know all the good defence setups to keep developing and evolving the base as the game/meta changes, even as slow as it is now.

with only two walls to break through to get to all of your resources, it would be rather easy to rush middle compartment from one side. yeah I would lose my guys and not 100% but who cares about medals anyway? eh, but what do I know? -Regular Joe

I'll be curious how you find the donut base. I want to try it too but don't have enough walls until my medieval upgrade finishes (and maybe the first library upgrade too).

You can leave stuff out depending on what you have (walls, extra towers etc.), and bring em inside as you get the extra walls, on my current design my castle is outside and I even have some extra walls.

So far it's been doing very well, no single storage stolen, I will keep posting my results along with a screenshot of my current layout after more testing, but it seems like it's going to do just fine :)
