Why upgrade your walls to maximum?

Because gates of the same level as walls have about the same amount of hitpoints as walls two levels below, it seems a waste of effort/gold to upgrade walls to the max since gates will allways be the weakest link. Considering that gates cost about three times as much as walls I would suggest giving them the same amount of hitpoints.

your troops can exit through gates, so it can be use in tactical advantage. It's pretty logical that gates has less hit points then wall. both in game and in real life

Right. Gates are about giving your defending troops efficient paths to the attacking army from multiple directions. Having them properly placed makes a considerable difference in how effective your defense is. It's logical that a gate (not being a giant pile of solid stones) would be the weakest link in a defensive wall. I use all of my gates and have them maxed out (at least, at Medieval level. I'm getting fairly close to advancing to gunpowder age, so soon that will not be the case) and could wish for 1 or 2 more.

Gates don't cost more? A lvl 11 -> 12 wall post cost 5m, as does a gate....

They made walls so pricey because it filters through the dedicated & the not-so-dedicated. It shows who truly is a fan of this game (excluding all the hackers with max walls obviously). Plus the more hp a wall/gate has, the longer your towers have to pummel enemy troops. Simple concept really....

You don't get my point. I don't question the purpose of gates, but considering their weakness there is no benefit in upgrading your walls to a higher level than the strenght of the gate with the highest hitpoints. E.g. my level 9 gate has 14.664 hp and my level 9 wall 21.996 (both after Kremlin). So upgrading my wall any further is useless.

Btw I tried not using any gates but then garrisons, stables and bunkers inside the walls won't trigger until the wall is breached.

When I'm attacking my troops tend to ignore the gates & only attack the walls- which is odd as you'd think the gates would be easier to break through. Plus they all open if you destroy the TC, yet my troops don't seem to notice.

keep gates +1 level, and then start next upgrade with gates. loong way till 13th level, so you will worry when you will have 13th lvl gate and all walls lvl 12.

at same principal we could argue 'why have walls when archers and cannon can shoot through, or saboteur or wall miner can blow them up'.

Defender buildings trigger if theres no gates. But when they spawn they dont move. Some people use this to keep their tc troops from being baited away

My gates dont open when tc destroyed. Might be just a visual thing in ur game. The gates arent open for ur troops to use. Still have to break through them

Troops dont always go for the gate unless its really close. Most of the time they go for the wall

I disagree, my point is that level 13 walls are useless if your weakest point is no stronger than a level 11 wall. @dbukalski: thanks for the info didn't notice that.

naked gate L 10 is 14,408
naked wall L 9 is 18,432

but, while gate has lower HP, it's being supported by troops who can pass it and hit units hitting your gate.
I agree that difference is noticeable. again, can be used to your advantage, if troops AI will make them go for the gate, spread some traps around and use weakness to your advantage.

For example my defense log is packed full of maxed out kitchen sink attacks that i kept down to 2 or less medals. I know for sure this would not be possible without high level walls. Ur defense is a combination of building dps and wall hp(building hp is worthless). Ur defense only as good as ur walls. Thats the most recent attacks today. Days of the same thing. They throw everything they have at me. They dont get the oil, trade goods and gold. Unless they use demolitions on one of those. Or zeppelin sometimes gets one

That is true only if you put the gates where the attacker most wants them. Otherwise they have to eat wall.

I don't know that this is necessarily true- first you've kept your losses to 2 or less stars (you're showing more medal losses than 2 or fewer ;) )

My walls are about 37% lvl8, rest are lvl7. I have gates as low as lvl5 and as high as lvl8. I'm assuming your showing your last 6 defense logs. In my last 6 defense logs I have 2 defeats at 2 stars (-18 medals total) and 4 victories (thus, no stars; +67 medals total), mostly pretty substantial attacks. I think my walls are decent, and likely a good deterrent for the most part, but certainly not better than a lot of other people's walls, and I'm still keeping logs packed full of pretty big attacks kept significantly below 2 or less stars.

Perhaps your experience is more specific to higher leagues? Don't get me wrong- I do think my walls are helpful- I just, personally, wouldn't attribute all my success to them.
