I really think that every game developer has to find his balance between a good playable game and and interesting game concept.
But there is another aspect which every developer has to take into consideration, and that is his audience, just like the movies.
There are also a whole lot of kids playing games.
And don't forget that there is a world out there of less educated people...... :-(
So I'm fine with a game concept which teaches the user some history and have a good game to go with.
I personally do not like the games that put hate/crime/inhuman activities or such in it, just to sell a game cause the content is controversial.
On this focked up planet there are things to be proud of as humans, and there way more things to be ashamed of.
Let try to make games on which we can be proud of.....
To answer your question, there is probably a very good reason why I do not play Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, again anything in a fantasy game concept, go ahead.
Now I would have no problem with a WW2 concept, but in this war game I really don't think a nazi death camp should have its place.
But let's leave it with that.
It's nothing personal to me, nor to you, I guess. I just thought the idea was....well, not so well though of.
